It was a cool autum evening with temperatures dipping into the 50s at race time.  Thursday nights at the Texas Raceway are their “Street Legal” race nights.   You get to see all the street racers come out and compete.  The racers vary from, I kid you not, a 1998 Chrysler Grand Caravan to Ford Super Duty Diesels and all the regular cars one would expect like Mustangs, Civics, Camaros, Firebirds, Lightnings, SRT-4 and myriad cast of others.

So what is the measure of speed for a car?  is it the 1/4 mile or 0-60 times?  The 1/8th mile doesn’t get a lot of consideration in this argument, but with a decent racing simulator you can calculate your 0-60 and 1/4 mile times from an 1/8 mile run.

Tonight the GTO hit a new personal fastest time of 8.22 in the 1/8th mile, that would be good enough for a 12.6 in the 1/4 mile and a trip to 60mph in 4.1 seconds.

The measure of speed in a lot of cars is very simply a stop light drag.  A street light drag can be legally performed at your local 1/8 mile strip.  Most street cars will cross the finish line at a short track going only 70-90mph.  It is very similar to going from a dead stop to highway speeds.

So once again the GTO proves itself as a very fast street car.  My GTO is slight modded with 160 degree thermostat, a dyno tune, CAI and drag radials.

The Sports Car Country Club https://www.caroftheday.org/2008/05/12/the-sports-car-country-club/ https://www.caroftheday.org/2008/05/12/the-sports-car-country-club/#comments Tue, 13 May 2008 05:06:15 +0000 http://www.caroftheday.org/?p=29 What if you could join a country club but instead of playing on a golf course your got to play on a 3.1 mile road course?  I don’t play much golf, but I guarantee a day at the track racing, is more fun than being on the green putting.

Well this isn’t a car enthusiast’s fantasy it is a reality. Texas Motorsport Ranch is a real place.  They bill themselves as a “Sports Car Country Club”.

Texas Motorsport Ranch has member days where you can race your own car out on their track.  Local car clubs also can come out and rent the facilities for the day.

I’ve had the good fortune of spending a few days out at the track and I highly recommend it for anyone that get out there and race.  I especially recommend it if you find yourself driving a car that was really designed to excel in a track environment.

There is a driving school located at the track to help you fine tune your track driving skills.  If you live anywhere near the Dallas/Ft. Worth area look into the Texas Motorsport Ranch, it is worth the visit.

The Mighty 5.9 Video https://www.caroftheday.org/2008/05/01/the-mighty-59-video/ https://www.caroftheday.org/2008/05/01/the-mighty-59-video/#comments Fri, 02 May 2008 03:14:27 +0000 http://thecaroftheday.wordpress.com/?p=10 A former Car of the Day (COTD) was a vehicle I had the pleasure of owning.  The requirements for this vehicle were it must be able to tow 5000lbs, carry 4 people and be as fast as possible.

The solution to this challenge was the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Unlimited.  By the time I was done tuning out the engine it had over 400lb-ft of torque at the wheels and all wheel drive.  It was a beast at a short straight track.  Here is some video of it beating a lot of different cars and drivers, including a Corvette!

1998 was the last year of the ZJ Grand Cherokee and the Chrysler executives needed to find a way to inject a bit of life into the final year of Grand Cherokee.  They looked around and found that the 360 engine from the Dodge trucks could be crammed into their Jeep.  It made for one heck of a sleeper.  I have a lot of stories and thoughts about the 5.9 Jeeps and the 5.9 engines in future blogs.

It was the predecessor to the current SRT8 Grand Cherokee and a great car that I am happy I had the opportunity to enjoy for a season.
